What is Ramadan?

Oh! you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous (Q 2:183)

The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Qur’ān was revealed as guidance for mankind, and as clear signs that show the right way and distinguish between right and wrong.(Q 2:185)

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic Hijri Calendar. Allah, the Almighty revealed the Holy Quran in this month and for that reason Muslims are prescribed to observe fast during the daytime for the whole month. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is mandatory for every healthy and capable Muslims and is counted as the fourth among the five pillars of Islam. The others are confession of faith, five daily prayers, Zakah (alms giving) and Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca).

During the month of Ramadan, every day before the dawn breaks believers have their meal and from dawn to dusk they abstain from eating and drinking. Fasting is complete only when Muslims not only abstain from food but also from other worldly pleasures, entertainments or loose talks etc. Ramadan is a month where every virtuous act of believers even as small as pronouncing a syllable from the Holy Quran receives exponential rewards from the Almighty, so believers spend their time in reciting the Quran, increasing their prayers and also in remembrance, repentance and supplication to almighty Allah.

When the call for prayer is given at dusk for the prayer of Maghrib, Muslims break their fast with dates or water and are free to have food until next dawn. While Ramadan is a month where Muslims seclude themselves in prayer at home or in the Masjid overnight (I’tikaf), it is also the time where they socialize more with others at mosque during extended prayers and also by inviting them over for Iftar feasts. Strengthening your relationships with your family and friends is highly rewarded in Islam and the month of Ramadan gives the best opportunity for that along with abundant rewards.

The month of Ramadan is divided into 3. The first 10 days are taught to be the days of mercy, the second 10 days of forgiveness and the last 10 days to free oneself from Hellfire. As the month of Ramadan progresses, rather than losing the pace, Muslims become more rigorous in their worship.

The Prophet (Pbuh) has also said : The blessed month has come to you! Allah has made fasting obligatory upon you during it. During it, the gates to Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are locked, and the devils are chained. There is a night [during this month] which is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of its good is really deprived of something great.”

So the believers try their best not to lose the reward for this gracious night. They utilize their time in the last 10 days so much more on prayers, Quran and in the Masjid rather than for sleep. Towards the end of Ramadan, Zakat-Al Fitr, an obligatory alms is collected from the Muslims and distributed to the needy in the society.

After this rigorous month of worship comes the first day of Shawwal, when Muslims all over the world celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr. They enjoy a light breakfast and gather in the mosque in their best attire for the special Eid congregational prayer. For Muslims, Eid-ul-Fitr is a day of joy for Muslims as much as it gives a heavy heart for parting with the glorious blessing of Almighty to his devotees, the Ramadan
